I. Discuss the various theories of punishment that are considered when sentencing an individual who has been convicted of a crime.
II. Some states advocate "truth in sentencing" and have eliminated parole. Would you keep or eliminate parole? Why? (Explain your answer fully & support your opinion by discussing the benefits of whatever side you chose)
III. Discuss community corrections and describe the different types of alternatives to incarceration and probation available in the United States. See the drug court video for an alternative to incarceration. Are these alternatives successful? YouTube Video: "Is There a Drug Court in Your Town?".
IV. Approximately how many cases do you think plea versus goes to trial? Do you think plea bargaining is just? Consider who may not think it is just. Explain your answer (use your homework exercise to assist in giving your answer). Should our court system continue to allow pleas?
