Remy is a social worker at the county drug and alcohol program. She is asked to form a task group to address opioid abuse in the community. Remy offers encouragement to the members during their early meetings by nodding and rephrasing what they say. She also clarifies what she hears. Remy notices that the members seem to be engaged and motivated to share their experiences. One member even shares about the loss of a family due to opioid abuse. Remy empathizes with the member and reflects how they must be feelings.
After a couple of meetings, Remy feels confident that the members understand the purpose of the group. Remy isn't surprised, though, when some conflict arises about how tasks will be assigned. She knows that this is a common problem in the development of groups. Remy jumps in and helps to solve the problem and directs the group back on task. Remy is relieved when the group establishes clear roles and norms for behaviors. She realizes the group is focused on completing tasks.
