• The welfare reform measure known as the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, included cutting the number of people receiving assistance by about half, but the actual poverty rate came down only slightly. In other words, many people were working for income but remained poor because of low wages. Should the reform be considered a success? Why or why not?
• Does popular music contain bias against women? Listen to at least two types of music (e.g, rap, rock, country, etc.). Discuss the various messages regarding the life goals and the relative power of males and females that are presented in each of the types of music. Cite specific examples when applicable.
• Watch several episodes of the television show COPS. How does this show portray the typical offender (e.g., age, sex, race, social class, demeanor, etc.)? Does this portrayal seem accurate to you in light of what you have learned in this chapter? Why or why not?
