"Taking the Profit Out of Crime", FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, which has been included in the reading section of Module 5.
This article summarizes money laundering violations and discusses the three types of forfeiture: administrative, civil, and criminal. Then watch John Oliver's satirical discussion of forfeiture in the YouTube video provided.
Forfeiture has been very successful in money laundering cases and has been expanded to cover many other violations.
Why do you think that is? Some criticize forfeiture as unfair and describe it as a legal scheme used by the powerful Government to take money and property away from suspected criminals?
Many criminals will not come forward to claim the illegal proceeds belong to them under oath. Do you think the forfeiture laws are a good idea or are they an unfair way for the Government to take property and money from suspects who may need the assets to defend themselves from the Government?
