2. Discuss the subject matter in the painting. Does the title help you to understand the work? What, if anything, is happening in the work? Tell me what is in the work, not just the title of the work. If the work is a nonobjective work, what was the artist possibly expressing by his nonobjective treatment?

3. What medium or media did the artist use to create the work of art? What speciDc materials? Describe how the artist used the media and techniques and what the effect is of his use of the media and techniques. Does the artist appear skillful in his use of media and techniques?

4. Describe how the artist used the visual elements of line, shape, light/color, texture, and space; describe the artist's use of principles of design such as unity and variety, focal point, proportion/scale, and balance. Discuss the elements and principles by such things as: are the shapes naturalistic, abstract, or nonobjective? Are the shapes presented in some unusual way? How?

Are the shapes geometric or organic/biomorphic? Are lines strong and harsh, irregular, indistinct, smooth, and curving, etc.? Is the color local, optical, or arbitrary color? What is the effect of the kind of color used? What is the effect of light in the work? Is spatial recession (depth) indicated? By what means? What type of balance is used? How is it created?

How was unity created? What was the artist trying to convey by using the visual elements and principles of design in the ways you have described? Discuss anything else about the visual elements and principles of design that you think is important for describing the painting.

5. How does the work relate to contemporary attitudes or life? What attitudes or what aspects of contemporary life seem to relate to the work of art? What about the work suggests these things to you?

6. Does the artist have a particular point of view that he/she is trying to convey to you? What is it? Do you agree or disagree with the artist's point of view? Your opinion must be supported by your analysis of the subject matter and the visual elements/principles of design. In other words, write a conclusion about the work of art based upon your analysis.
