After reading the textbook and the assigned materials, I don't agree with the statement that "corporations are people". While corporations are given certain legal rights and protections, they're still not people in the same way individuals are. A corporation is a legal entity created under state law that can own property, enter contracts, and sue or be sued, but it exists separately from the people who own or manage it (Beatty & Samuelson, 2026). The Supreme Court's decision in "Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission" expanded corporate rights by ruling that corporations have First Amendment protections when it comes to political speech and campaign spending (Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, 2010). I understand why the Court made that decision, but I don't think it means corporations should be treated as actual people. To me, it simply means they have certain legal protections that allow them to function and do business. Winkler (2014) points out that corporations have gained more constitutional protections over time and, because of their financial resources, can have a great deal of influence. That raises concerns for me because corporations often have much more money than individual citizens, which can make it harder for everyday people to have their voices heard in the political process. Corporations are important to our economy, but they don't have personal values, emotions, or the ability to make moral decisions the way people do. Overall, I believe corporations should have the legal rights necessary to operate effectively, but I don't think those rights make them the same as natural persons.
