The societies built communities that were specifically for hunters, construction laborers, military forces and more; along with people from higher up, such as kings, priests and merchants that came from the ruling and noble classes. Before 1492, societies of the Americas were similar to societies in other parts of the world by the agriculture. For example: "A productive agriculture economy was the foundation of Maya society.
In many ways, Maya social and cultural traditions reflected the significance of agriculture to the Maya way of life." (Bentley/Ziegler, pg 119) Agriculture was where it all started, from hunting and cropping to construction labor and religion/traditions. And what made it unique was that they used what they made as a communication to communicate with other regions; and that's where long-distance traveling came about before Christopher Columbus step down on their land. They would travel across the ocean and land to make trades or to set base on another land. They carried on or influenced others to carry on their traditions and religions.
Another example, Australia and New Guinea, Australia maintained hunting and gathering societies. New Guinea continued agriculture, the cultivation of root crops and keeping pigs and chickens that spread throughout the island. These societies had influenced one another in some way that inspired for others to build and continue something new.
