It was a story I heard over and over throughout my fieldwork. In the midst of the Asian Financial Crisis of the late 1990s, young, middle-class urbanites like Aji found themselves in a difficult position. The relative economic prosperity of the late Suharto period, coupled with economic deregulation, had expanded the size and spending capacity of the Indonesian middle class.
