Discuss the importance of black voters

Assignment: AFRICAN AMERICAN POLITICS

Research Essay

Overview

The 2018 midterm elections have a significant number of African American politicians running for office. This representation of minorities is perhaps the most significant since the 19th century reconstruction era and 1971 establishment of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The first black elected officials were during Reconstruction. After Reconstruction, it would not be until the 1970s that more than four black politicians served in the U.S. Congress in the same session. In the history of the USA there have only been three black governors, and of the three only two were elected to the office. The midterm elections will have three black candidates for governor in the states of Maryland, Georgia and Florida.
