Case Scenario: Medicine
You are a primary care clinician and your patient is a small boy with fever and malaise who is grizzling. He was recovering recently from a cold when he seemed to deteriorate. The only abnormality on clinical examination is bilateral bulging red tympanic membranes of the ears, in addition to a fever of 37.9°C.‘He's got a middle ear infection', you tell the boy's mother.
‘Oh. Does he need antibiotics?' she asks.
CLINICAL QUESTION: In children with acute otitis media, are antibiotics effective at reducing symptoms?
