After reading Ch.2 in Tolbert and Hall (pp. 19-43), think about how the key structural dimensions discussed in the text can be used to describe your two organizations (World Bank and The Federal Reserve). Also think about the related readings and discussions that we have had on these issues. For this and all future papers, you should cite a minimum of three academic sources—and not the textbook. The textbook (Tolbert & Hall 2009) is a secondary work that refers you to the original studies. It should not be cited in a formal paper unless you are unable to locate the studies that the authors reference in the textbook (e.g., if a work is out of print).
This paper should be 4 pages in length. The memo should have the following structure:
• Intro: Write a simple “road map” paragraph. (E.g., “In this essay, I will discuss . . . . . First, I consider . . . . Second, I assess . . . Third, I describe . . .. Finally, I conclude . . . ”
• Section 1: Discuss the extent to which structural elements of complexity (vertical, horizontal & geographic) are present for both of your organizations.
• Each term (e.g., “vertical complexity”) should be briefly defined the first time it is mentioned. Always do this for every paper.
• To sum up this section, compare/contrast the two orgs on the structural dimensions. You can simply specify the variables in terms of high, medium, and low. E.g., Organization 1 exhibits a high degree of vertical complexity, as does Organization 2.
• Section 2: Discuss the degree of formalization in your two orgs. (Define/identify the two aspects of formalization before you get into your analysis.) How extensive are the rules? Are they generally followed? How are they enforced (or not)?
• Section 3: Centralization: To what extent is decision-making authority dispersed (or concentrated) in your two orgs?
• Conclusion: In your view, how complex are your two organizations? How do they compare in the key dimensions of complexity?
The paper should be formatted and submitted according to “Paper Specifications for Org Memo Assignments” Syllabus.
