Notes:

Notes on Genie Willey a 13 year old child was found in a home in Los Angeles who lived in complete isolation unable to speak , even though she was 13 years old her appearance was of a 6-7 year old. When discovered she was in diapers living in cage with chicken wire, she was unable to walk. Her parents Clark Wiley had told other people living in the home not to speak to genie or touch her, the wife Genie's mother was blind with cataracts and Clark her husband was controlling and may have been abusive to her. (not sure what education level the parents had). Genie was living in a dark, back bedroom (that had no natural light) and at times was strapped to a potty chair for days.

It was stated in the report that her father Clark may have been suffering from PTSD (his mother was shot and killed by a drive by shooting) and as a result had isolated himself and family from society. Before conviction for child abuse the farther Clark shot and killed himself.

Treatment for Genie:

James Cant Child Psychologist and Susan Curtis Lingustic who help her in her speech and overall development.

Left hemisphere of the brain affected was not given enough stimulation to grow, which regressed in size and function. ( Maslow heriachy of love and belonging).

With the psychologist help Genie was able to learned words, engage with people and it was revealed she was not retarded, but only suffered from abuse and lack of love, affection and stimulus. Her progression stop at around 18 years (find out why?) and monetary resources were depleted. Genie was sent back to her home to live with her mother which her mother was unable to care for her , so she was placed in foster care and was abuse and was afraid to speak d/t being severely punished for vomiting in one of the foster homes( what type of reward stimulus?) she did not want to open her mouth out of fear of repeated punishment.

IMPORTANT:

Foster parents was not skilled or educated to care for Genie.

She was placed in 6 foster homes to state care and she lived in therapist homes. The Therapist Susan Curtis became too involved(discussed client patient relationship) and the mother filed a law suit this was when she was returned to her mother.
