Social Issue
The social issue I am focusing on in my project is food insecurity. Food insecurity exists when people lack dependable access to sufficient safe and nutritious food which they need for maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. This issue affects millions of families in the United States, including many people who are working but still struggling to afford basic necessities because living costs continue to rise. The most important thing about this situation is that people think food insecurity happens because somebody fails to succeed while research indicates that structural economic obstacles create this problem. Loopstra and Tarasuk (2013) discovered that food insecurity affects people who experience income and employment changes therefore it shows that economic instability causes this problem instead of personal deficiencies. In addition, Walker et al. (2010) explain how limited access to grocery stores and healthy food options in certain communities creates further inequality. Food insecurity exists as a more complex problem because it creates challenges which stem from systemic issues. 2. Communication Approach My communication approach centers on listening first and building partnerships. I believe real solutions begin by understanding what communities are actually experiencing.
