Problem:
I chose to discuss the article "Six Employees File Rights Complaints Against UBC; Complaints Allege Discrimination Against Pregnant and Disabled Workers," published in the Globe and Mail (2018). The article discusses six employees who filed human rights complaints against the University of British Columbia (UBC). The complaints alleged that they experienced discrimination related to pregnancy and disability in the workplace. According to the article, some employees reported difficulties obtaining workplace accommodations, while others reported that they were treated unfairly or denied opportunities because of their pregnancy or disability status. My heart breaks reading and learning about discrimination against people with disabilities as well as pregnant women. As argued in several assignments throughout my courses here at Walden, it is unfortunate that these forms of discrimination continue to occur even today. These allegations arise important concerns regarding equal treatment, accessibility, and an employer's responsibility to provide reasonable accommodations for all employees. This situation is an example of both discrimination and oppression because the employees were allegedly treated differently based on protected characteristics rather than qualifications or ability to perform their job responsibilities.
