Discuss sense of pain is transduced by tonic receptors


Question: The sense of pain is transduced by tonic receptors. What adaptive significance might this have?  When a warm metal rod touches a cold receptor's receptive field, it is possible to perceive it as cold (and vice versa for a cold metal rod). Explain how this might occur.
