Harvard style guidelines

The Harvard style is an author-date style. While there are documents guiding its use, there are acceptable variations used by universities and journals. This sample illustrates how to reference four types of publications according to Department's version of Harvard: a book, a journal article accessed online, a report accessed online and a website.

Please note:

Consistency, accuracy, punctuation and spacing are important

• In-text citations are identified by the authors' names and the publication year in brackets after the relevant word in the sentence
The reference list is in alphabetical order

• Position the in-text citation immediately after the relevant word and before the punctuation mark

When including page numbers in the in-text citation, use the format (Hafslund et al.• 2008, p. 344) or (Hafslund et al. 2008, pp. 344-345)
Use single quotation marks for direct quotations

• For in-text citations, in the first instance, when there are:

• o two authors, list the first two authors' names o three or more authors, list the first author's name followed by et al.
For all subsequent in-text citations for publications with two or more authors list

• only the first author's name followed by et al. In the reference list include all authors' names
