Discuss principles of both republican and democratic forms

Assignment task:

"The United States Constitution is a document that manifests the principles of both republican and democratic forms of government. The Constitution is a republican form of government because it is based on the principle of representative government, where citizens elect representatives to make decisions on their behalf. This is in contrast to a direct democracy, where citizens make decisions directly. The Constitution also manifests democratic principles in that it provides for the protection of individual rights and liberties, such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to due process. At the same time, the Constitution deviates from both republican and democratic principles in certain ways. For example, the Constitution does not provide for direct democracy, as citizens do not have the right to vote directly on laws or policies. Additionally, the Constitution does not provide for equal representation, as the Senate is composed of two representatives from each state regardless of population size. A current example of how the nation is moving away from the founding fathers' intentions as written in the Constitution and Bill of Rights is the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. FEC. In this case, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations and unions have the same rights as individuals when it comes to political spending. This decision has been widely criticized as it goes against the founding fathers' intentions of limiting the influence of money in politics."
