Microorganisms that are grown in a closed culture is where no nutrients are added and most waste in not removed to follow a growth pattern is called a growth curve (Parker, et al., 2016). Culture density is the number of cells per unit volume (Parker, et al., 2016). The growth curve is divided into four phases to match the event of where the cells are at in a certain time. These four phases are lag phase, log phase, stationary phase, and death phase. Lag phase is a small number of cells are preparing for the next phase of growth. These cells can grow but there is not an increase in number of the living cells in this phase. Log phase is where the cells are dividing by binary fission and the number of cells increases (Parker, et al., 2016). Stationary phase is when the number of live cells reaches a plateau. This slows the rate of growth in the bacterial cells causing cell division and possibly death. Lastly, death phase is a big decrease of the number of living cells caused by toxic waste and nutrients are exhausted (Betts, et al., 2016). Need Assignment Help?
