Assignment:

"Media Law and Intellectual Property" - Instructions

Dear Students,

Our first day of sessions on "Mass Media Law and Intellectual Property" are scheduled on Tuesday, 25 January 2022. During these sessions we will address the general principles of Intellectual property (IP) protection and its interplay with Media Legislation. After setting the scene, we will focus on specific IP rights, digital rights, privacy and personal data protection, the rights of publishers as well as online platforms, and their role for seeking a shaky balance between the freedom of speech, privacy and protection of IPR's holders.

We would like to leverage on the diversity of your respective academic backgrounds and your countries of origin. To this end, we intend to dedicate the first assignment to the following subject.

A. OBJECTIVE

The objective is that you make a Group class PP presentation and an Individual executive summary to the presentation on "My country as a Media and IP location. "

The primary goal would be that you evaluate the key Policy landscape of your home country (or any other country that you would like to cover) in respect of the Media Legislation development and exploitation of Intellectual Property.

We suggest to include 2 parts in the assignment:

1. General Policy and Legislative analysis of the country/countries as Media and IP development location

2. Media and IP Case-Study covering a reference to a "hot" media topic in the country/countries and how it deals with the freedom of speech/privacy/IP protection dilemma.

B. GUIDANCE

We would like to give you maximal freedom on:

• - how to approach and cover the subject;

• - how to leverage any knowledge and key learning points gained in our sessions; and

• Nevertheless, we would like to include some guidance and examples of topics / issues you may include in your presentations.

1. General Policy and Legislative analysis of the country/countries as Media and IP development location

• The overall Policy and Legislative context of the country

For example: Key Legislative instruments in the area of Media Law and IP; Recent facts and figures on the level of protection of digital rights; Major State Policy tendencies and developments; other.

2. Case study covering a reference to a "hot" highly debatable media topic in the country/countries and how it deals with the freedom of speech/privacy/IP protection dilemma.

To complement the general Policy and Legislative analysis part, we would also like you to select a highly debatable issue in your country and illustrate how it is addressed in the Media and IP related contexts. You may want to consider some of the following aspects:

• A scenario/problem introduction

For example: Facts & figures, history; What are the key industries the debatable issue may affect/already affects?; Why is this issue critical for your country's Media and IP Policy?; etc.

• The role of digital rights and IP:

For example: What digital rights and IPRs important for the country? Why?; Is there any clash between the values of personal data protection and freedom of expression? How is the responsibility of online platforms and search engines regulated; Is there any "right to be delisted/forgotten"?; Filtering/blocking infringing content?Censorship? Other.

Formalities:

• Word count: between 2500 to 3000 words for an executive summary.

• Cover, Table of Contents, References and Appendix are excluded of the total word count.
