Children who were separated from their families were often recruited into rebel groups, causing severe distress and increased risk for mental illnesses and substance use disorders (Levey et al., 2013: Btirgin et al., 2022). Levey et al. (2013) conducted research using 171 informants from Liberia from the Ministry of Health, local non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and religious leaders to understand the mental health challenges of former child soldiers. The research identified significant health consequences, including mental illnesses such as PTSD, depression, and substance use disorders, due to the trauma experienced during the war (Levey et al., 013). It emphasizes the need for effective interventions such as counseling, better educational opportunities, and skilled training, followed by housing, community integration programs, recreation, and medical care.
