Problem 1: Consider one kind of surveillance that you have experienced, heard or read about this week. Who is surveilling whom? Why? Is there a difference between the stated reason and the real reason for the surveillance? What effects does the surveillance have? What rights, if any, seem to be infringed by the surveillance? Most importantly, how does this instance of surveillance relater to power and freedom? (You can use our readings or events in the world to answer this.)
Problem 2: Consider the world in which we live in light of the fictional world of the novel that we are reading this week. Identify and describe (as precisely as you can) any similarities you see between the world of the novel and the world you live in. Be sure to choose similarities to our major course themes. For example, obviously our world, like the world of the Hunger Games, has trees, but this is not an interesting similarity for us, since it has little to do with spectacle or surveillance.
