Memorandum 1 - "Briefing Memo"
• Pick a country classified as developing by the World Bank (i.e., low-income, lower middle income, or upper middle income).
• Identify a key factor that the country is currently facing that is keepng it from increased living standards and further development. Write a brief "memo" (2 to 3 pages) that summarizes the issue identified. Write the memo as if you are briefing your supervisor who is an economist but knows very little (if anything) about this specific issue in this specific country. You need to be concise and to the point. Your supervisor only has a few minutes to read this memo and expects to understand the basics of this issue and how the country may or may not be dealing with the issue identified. The type of topics you can select are open to both microeconomic topics as well as macroeconomic topics. For example, you may select issues dealing with education or nutrition levels of children, access to markets by small farmers, migration, microcredit, and or environmental issues. You can also choose to discuss issues of unemployment, inflation, growth, and or infrastructure.
