MMIS- Fundamentals of Analytics and BI
Objective and Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to help students become familiar with a professional proposal for a decision support system (DSS)/Business Intelligent (BI) solution. Moreover, students will be asked to prepare a report that will rely on content covered in the textbook assign for this course as well as outside reading.
Description of project:
You are asked to observe the decision making/BI processes in an organization that you are familiar with. An example for decision making process can involve the manufacturing of a product, providing a service, customer support, etc. This may also include decision making processes related to: design, supply, production, inventory control, marketing, etc.
Based on the knowledge gained during the term, your assignment will be to recommend a DSS/BI system that will improve or replace the current processes within the organization. Make sure to provide reference from at least five (5) refereed sources (not older than 3 years) to support your argument, and include diagrams, charts, and table where applicable to support your recommendations.
Your report should include the following sections:
1. The Organization
1.1 Brief History of the Organization
1.2 Organizational chart (for individuals related to the decision making processes you selected)
1.3 Description of the current organizational culture, and how it influences performance
1.4 Description of the influences of power and politics within the organization on the decision making process
2. Project Rationale and Summary
2.1 Description of the present decision making processes
2.2 Description of the current problems or challenges faced within the organization
2.3 Description of the objectives or benefits that a DSS/BI may provide (based on the problems outlined in 2.2)
2.4 Description of the key stakeholders of the decision making processes
3. Decision Support System (DSS) Proposal
3.1 Discuss how a DSS/BI system can help in each process (described in 2.1 above).
3.2 In which portion of the decision making process is a DSS/BI most helpful for decision makers? Why? Provide support for your argument from the literature.
3.3 What type of DSS/BI do you recommend for the proposed decision making processes? Justify the appropriateness of your recommendation, and provide support for your argument. Provide a high-level overview and the design specifications for the system:
- Specify the hardware and the software components required to build the system.
- If you plan to use a DBMS, present the relevant logical data model.
- For analytical models, formulate the model and justify the appropriateness of the model.
- If an expert system is used, explain the need for the approach and present the knowledge base.
