Discuss emotional intelligence

Assignment:

You need at least a 75-word comment on my class mate's discussion

In this discussion, we were asked to discuss emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others (Sterrett, E. A, 2000). Studies have shown that people with high EI have greater mental health, job performance, and leadership skills (Tearle, R. 2014). I have thought of an entertaining story of a coworker that was very difficult to work with and has caused me a lot of difficultly that I would like to share. Several months ago, I worked for a section that was held accountable for training the new troops that came directly from boot camp and tech school. Usually out of a group of new troops there is always one or two that just don't seem like they are going to conform to the standards of the military.

One young man out of the last group of 4 constantly had to be told to shave, get haircuts, show up to work and appointments on time, in addition to him needing extra help in learning how processes work for the technical parts of the job. This new troop had poor emotional intelligence, because he never knew when people were upset with him, he never understood different feelings and non-verbal's that were expressed.

Everyone used to make jokes about him and say the reason he was always so clueless was because he was from Kentucky. This kid's short comings caused myself and other coworkers lots of stress on an everyday basis. Every day was something else with this kid. After looking back on the situation months later, I realized that not everyone will grasp concepts and learn the same way. Everyone may need to be taught, lead and managed differently.
