Problem:
Now that you've read the introductory material and had a good taste of marine botany and of the dizzying diversity of algae and marine plants found on our blue planet, your end-of-week assignment will have you assemble a visual portfolio of representative species that effectively exemplify the major algal and plant groups.
Instructions:
For each major taxonomic group, you will list two representative species, describe two key features that identify them as clear members of their taxonomic group, and include a good image visualizing these key features.
These two species should come from each of the main algal groups Chlorophyta, Rhodophyta, and the Phaeophyceae, and you should also include two single-celled algae from any other Protist groups, two marine plant species, and two algae from the non-eukaryotic cyanobacteria - for a total of twelve species for the whole portfolio. Be sure to use reputable sources - either quality popular science articles or websites or, best, scientific journal articles - and be sure to properly cite these sources using APA format
As you'll see in the coming weeks, the taxonomy of what we call "algae" is pretty complex and in some flux, so you'll have to be sure you're referring to fairly recent primary literature (<5-10 years old) to have a reasonable chance of accurately listing a species in the correct higher taxonomic category. Please create this portfolio and submit as either a PowerPoint, Google Slides, or pdf file, with one page/slide dedicated to each species (twelve species total) and one page/slide for references.
