Problem:
I personally am against the use of the death penalty from a non-religious perspective. Especially in cases involving horrible crimes like murder. I do not think the government should have the power to decide who lives and who dies because to me that's basically the same thing as murder. There have been cases where innocent people were later proven not guilty after already spending years on death row. Once someone is executed there is no way to fix that mistake. That alone makes the death penalty very risky to me. I also think life without parole is a better option in most cases. If someone commits a very serious crime and is considered dangerous to society then they should absolutely be punished and kept away from the public which to me makes sense. Sentencing someone to life without parole still holds them accountable while avoiding the possibility of executing an innocent person. In a way spending the rest of your life in prison without freedom can also be seen as a severe punishment. Another reason I am against the death penalty is because I do not think it truly prevents crime if you know what I mean. Many crimes happen in moments of anger, desperation, or while someone is not thinking clearly, so I do not think people stop and think about whether they could receive the death penalty before committing a crime basically just doing before thinking. Because of that, I do not believe capital punishment is necessarily a stronger deterrent than long prison sentences. Need Assignment Help?
