Assignment Task: Kirra is a 3-year old girl in kinship care of her Aboriginal grandmother. Kirra's mother is unable to take care of her family at the moment and Kirra has never met her father. Her grandmother Tarni (as the closest relative) has moved down to Victoria to take care of Kirra and her 8-year-old brother. Tarni has walked into the Early Learning Centre where you work, unannounced, looking to enroll Kirra in long day care for 3 days a week.

Tarni's spoken English is very limited. She is from a remote community and has never enrolled a child into care before.

a) List and discuss 2 cultural factors that may impact on the quality of service you deliver to Tarni and her family.

b) Identify 2 critical issues that could influence your interactions and communication with Tarni and Kirra.

c) List and describe 2 communication techniques and 2 work practices that will show your understanding and respect for the cultural differences of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

d) Research and document at least 2 interpreter services available specifically for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients. You need to document the name of the service, the contact details and the source of the information.
