CASE:
When Michelle arrives for the session, you let her know that her mother (Monique Hawkins) has called. You share that her mother said that she is worried about Michelle and 'the baby'. She says that Michelle and Rashon are fighting all the time. Michelle came home to her house last night with a bruise on her face. Mrs. Hawkins wants to keep Darnell until Michelle and Rashon can work things out.
Michelle admits that she and Rashon have been fighting, and that he is abusive to both her and Darnell. Darnell has a bruise on his leg where Rashon hit him last night. She reports that Darnell is both very clingy and irritable. He yells back at her when she tries to get him to calm down. Michelle does not know what to do - she does not want to stay with her mother because her mother is drinking too much, but she is ambivalent about going back to Rashon.
You say, "I think that the environment at Rashon's is really affecting Darnell, and I am worried about him. I think we need some help to keep you and Darnell safe. I would like to call CPS." Michelle is at first very upset, saying that she wished she had not come in today. When you point out that by getting CPS involved, she might be able to have an alternative housing situation for a while, she calms down. You make the call to CPS.
