After reading Chapter 6 on confidentiality and completing the self-inventory, one of my biggest takeaways was how complex confidentiality becomes in real-world practice. Before reading this chapter, I viewed confidentiality as a relatively straightforward ethical responsibility: protect client information and maintain trust. However, the self-inventory and case examples highlighted how often ethical dilemmas arise when client safety, legal responsibilities, and professional judgment intersect. I realized that my initial thought was to prioritize the clients trust and our relationship, which is important, but not sufficient when there is risk of harm to the client or others.
Reviewing the ethics codes related to confidentiality, limits to confidentiality, and duty to protect and warn reinforced the importance of being clear and transparent with clients from the very beginning. Informed consent is not just a formality, but an ongoing process that helps set realistic expectations and protects everyone. I also became more aware of how duty to protect and duty to warn can require difficult decisions, especially when disclosing information may feel like a betrayal of the client's trust.
The cases of Erica, Serena, and Jeremy emphasized how challenging these decisions can be when clients disclose information related to potential harm, personal safety, or involvement of third parties. Overall, this chapter helped me better understand the balance between respecting confidentiality and fulfilling my responsibility to protect clients and others from harm. Moving forward, I plan to continue strengthening my understanding of ethical guidelines, using supervision as a resource when I feel uncertain, and practicing clear communication with clients about the limits of confidentiality!
