Intercultural communication is often shaped by the messages we receive about cultures and co-cultures through the news media. In this assignment you will consider the representation of race, class, gender, or sexuality in the news media in order to reflect on the experiences of the people depicted in the news and how the media represent their identities and their interests.
In this assignment, you will create a PowerPoint presentation of approximately 6-8 slides in which you will do the following:
Select a co-culture from this week's readings: race, class, gender, or sexual orientation. Explain why you have selected this co-culture.
Select one large mainstream national news source generally regarded as a reliable source of news such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, CBS News, NBC News, ABC News, etc. (Please avoid "clickbait" sites like BuzzFeed and social media sites.) Review their news coverage for three days and describe how your co-culture is depicted in the news.
Analyze the message that your news source sends about your selected co-culture. If, for example, the news media are the only, or primary, way we "learn" about people who are different from us, what do you we "learn" about this co-culture from your news source? How do media depictions affect our perception of this co-culture?
Discuss which theories and concepts related to intercultural communication from our course readings help to explain how your selected co-culture is depicted in the media.
Recommend at least two possible ways to learn how to communicate more effectively with this co-culture and overcome media messages.
For the purpose of this presentation, you should imagine you are delivering your slideshow to a college-level class of students. What will they need to know? How will you appeal to them? Need Assignment Help?
