However, families of children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities encounter additional and complex challenges that extend across the child's lifespan. The development of a typical child may look something like reaching infant and childhood milestones at the estimated age range, progressing appropriately in the school setting with their same-aged peers, the progression of their intellectual functioning, and adaptive behavior such as social and daily living skills, and finally into adulthood by showing self-determination and goal setting while planning for their future. While there are certainly challenges parents faces when raising a typical child, such as social relationships, attitudes, differing perspectives, etc., these are minor in comparison to the lifelong support required of children with intellectual disabilities.
