I read the article on Newsela regarding Syrian refugees. The Republican governors sent a message to President Obama, warning him that Syrian refugees are not safe in their states. The governors claimed "it would be all but impossible to identify terrorists hidden among the refugees". Furthermore, they said, "it would be particularly risky to admit refugees so soon after the recent deadly attacks in Paris". Instead of letting the states decide, he enforced it anyway. This poses a threat to the 50 states and our nation. The attacks in Paris were carried out by the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS. It left 129 people dead and hundreds wounded. So the U.S. had problems knowing who to let in and who not because there was no way to tell if they were part of ISIS or not. It is unfortunate that states do not have control over refugee resettlement. The 1980 Refugee Act declares that it is decided by the Federal government. Individual states do not have the legal authority to block refugee placement. I don't think that it is beneficial for the states because they don't even get to pick if they want the refugee in the state. It is the Federal government who does it instead, which I find somewhat concerning. Why put our own nation at risk? I understand helping others, but this is too risky for our own state and citizens. So in the end I think that power should have been given to the states and let them decide.
