Discuss about the mass media consolidation

Assignment: Mass Media Consolidation

In a capitalist "democracy" like the United States, the corporate news media faithfully reflect the dominant class ideology both in their reportage and commentary, even while claiming to be balanced in their coverage of events. How do corporations exercise this power over the media? How have these corporations further consolidated their control over what we see and hear? Please answer both questions, and use the chart below and other sources to help you answer the questions. (Doesn't have to be a full page or anything just answer the question as you can)

Student Response (Government)

The way I strongly believe they exercise power over the media is by advertising and promoting what the "majority" people want. That being said for an example, advertisements on TV and on line is the major target that every larger corporation has. Most people now are on SOCIAL MEDIA and thats where most of these corporations do release new events, merchandise etc. What I do think that they tend to do is show us what we want to hear and not the truth, they figure ways to word things where its not a lie nor is it the truth and thats what really hurts the most. You cant trust anybody and especially those that have the power to speak out for others that don't have a platform nor voice loud enough for someone to hear. And those that do, don't do it the right way.

1. James Brown became known as "Soul Brother #1" due to his cultural pride and activist stance. How monumental was his performance the night after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.? Given the time frame of the 60's, what other events made this moment so volatile? (100 maximum)
