Discuss about the history of policing

Problem:

When I think about the history of policing, one of the most positive changes has been the increase in accountability. Many things that happened between law enforcement and the public were based on one person's word against another. Now we live in a time where things like body cameras, dashboard cameras, and public access to information have made it easier to review situations and hold people accountable when mistakes are made. I think this is very important because it helps build trust and gives both officers and citizens some level of protection. Instead of only interacting with people when there is a problem, many departments try to build relationships within the community. One of the most negative changes in my opinion is how divided the relationship between law enforcement and some communities has become over the years. Most of that came from publicized incidents and growing distrust. Many people automatically assume the worst about police officers and some officers may become more cautious or disconnected from the communities they serve. A lot of times law enforcement officers are expected to be counselors and social workers in addition to enforcing the law. I think it puts a lot of pressure on a system that was not originally designed to handle all of those roles. The biggest improvements in policing have come from accountability and community involvement while one of the biggest challenges has been the growing lack of trust between law enforcement and the public.
