Problem: This discussion asks us to think about the full scope of the Progressive Era by exploring the various ways Americans tried to improve their country in the early 20th century, and in what ways they succeeded or failed. It is important to remember that who and what qualified as "progressive" in the early 20th century extended all over the political and economic spectrum.
What bound them together was their desire for reform, driven by what one historian has called a "fierce discontent" among broad swaths of the population. Progressive policies addressed business, politics, the environment, urban decay, public health, and public education. What were the two most significant achievements of the Progressive Era? Why?
