Written Assignment Options
Choose from ONE of the following activities listed below: "Invent a Couple" or "Emerging Male Contraception Methods".
Option 1: Invent a Couple
In this lesson, you learned about methods of contraception. For this assignment option you will invent a hypothetical couple who are sexually active and need to choose a contraceptive method.
1. First, describe this couple's situation including:
a. Age(s)
b. Living arrangement
c. Family situation
d. Frequency of sexual activity
e. Future plans for children
f. Preferences/needs related to contraception
g. Relevant health and lifestyle considerations
2. Choose a method of birth control that will be the best option for this couple and explain your choice.
3. Describe the potential benefits and the drawbacks to this choice, including factors such as effectiveness, cost, ease of use, accessibility, reversibility, side effects, and any other details that are important to understanding the suitability of this method for the hypothetical couple.
4. Describe at least one contraceptive method that could be used as a back-up option.
5. Use references and citations as appropriate.
Option 2: Emerging Male Contraception Methods
For this option, you will conduct research on a new form of male contraception being developed (do not choose an existing method such as the condom or vasectomy). You can use scholarly/academic journal articles or credible popular sources, such as news reports and magazine articles. Find at least two (2) sources to answer the following questions in essay format. In your essay, be sure to respond to each of the following questions and make it clear in your essay where you are responding to each question:
1. What obstacles exist related to developing new forms of male contraception?
2. What is the name of the method you identified and how does it work to prevent pregnancy?
3. How is this method of contraception similar/different to current forms available?
4. How will this research advance birth control options for couples?
5. How popular do you think this method would be as birth control?
6. Do you think this would change gender roles regarding responsibility for birth control?
7. Do you think that unintended pregnancies would increase or decrease as a result of this being on the market?
8. If you were in a heterosexual relationship with someone and were trying to prevent pregnancy, would you consider such an option as this one?
