Discuss about health information technology

Discussion:Laboratory

What comes to mind when you hear Laboratory? For most it means a place to have tests performed, such as blood draws or cultures taken. In fact the definition of Laboratory is a building or part of a building equipped to conduct scientific experiments, tests, or investigations. It is also defined as a place to manufacture chemicals, and medications (dictionary.com).

I chose this topic, due to my love for Phlebotomy or what I tell people, "being a vampire." I have always enjoyed drawing blood, so I guess that is one reason why I became a certified phlebotomist and chose this topic, per say. Another reason I chose this particular topic is, the labs are the key players in performing tests to locate what is going on with your loved ones health (Tomlinson, 2016).

During researching of my topic I discovered that technology is very important in achieving easy integration of laboratory data into the total clinical pathway of "Informatics,"which is the art and science of transforming data into useful information. Informatics is a powerful tool in pathology. An excellent use of pathology services will depend upon better involvement of IT in prior or post analytical phases, both to oversee the demand and to encourage the appropriate test that has been requested (Jones, Johnson, Batstone, 2005).

The Laboratory systems that are used seem to be very sophisticated systems within any health organization across the world. However, with change in development, there comes high tech electronic medical record systems and pathology computing which can fall short. Laboratory IT specialist are facing greater challenges which includes maturing electronic records, digital image systems, gene sequencing, companion diagnostics, budget constraints, hospital mergers, laboratory mergers, growth of internet and consumer data access (Jones, Johnson, Batstone, 2005).
