The major research paper required for this course involves a legal case analysis. Students will research and investigate a legal case related to a subject of their choice from the following list of subjects:
Topic is
Disability discrimination
Students will then prepare a written report presenting the legal case and using the following outline:
I. Case citation (ex., Patrick v. Ridge)
II. Facts of Case (include facts that led up to the case, who is complainant, who is defendant and what each side is arguing)
III. What laws apply to the case?
IV. Final decision of the court
V. HR analysis â€" what did the employer do right, what did the employer do wrong, and what should the employer do to prevent it in the future?
A good source for legal cases is the Lexis Nexis database. Other websites such as www.lexisone.com, or www.findlaw.com may also be used.
The HR analysis is the most important section and is worth 60 of the 100 possible points for this assignment. In this section, students must use information learned from chapters 1 through 11 to support ideas of what employers did right or wrong, and to prevent it from happening again. Students must recommend solutions as learned in previous chapters.
There is not a required length to this assignment. But students should prepare a well developed case using excellent grammar, punctuation and spelling, and providing a thorough explanation of ideas, opinions or solutions.
