Discourse of sexuality from the 19th century

Assignment task:

Michel Foucault: Gauntlet Chapter 6 Discourses and lifestyle

Foucault is particularly interested in the discourse of sexuality (in Western Europe and the US) from the 19th century on. What do you make of his argument that (simplistically put) sexuality as a core part of one's identity is a relatively recent phenomenon? What does that mean, exactly? We know that queer people and same-sex desire and intimacy have existed throughout history, so he's not claiming that the presence of LGBT+ folks is a recent development... Then what IS he saying?!

Please answer and elaborate so i can completely understand.
