Problem1. On April 20, 1999, 18 year old Eric Harris and 17 year old Dylan Klebod entered Columbine High School in the Littleton, Colorado, wearing black trench coats and carrying the rifle, a semiautomatic pistol, two sawed off shotguns, and more than 30 homemade bombs. Laughing and taunting they sprayed bullets at fellow students, killing 12 classmates and 1 teacher before fatally shooting themselves.
Deviance and crime aren’t peculiarly American phenomena. In a Japanese elementary school in June 2004, an 11 year old girl stabbed a 12 year old classmate to death after an argument over messages sent each other over internet.
In survey of 161,082 students in 35 Western countries, 37 to 69 percent of boys and 13 to 32 percent of girls reported fighting, usually with friends or relatives. The lowest prevalence of fighting for both boys and girls was in Finland; the highest prevalence was in eastern or central European countries (Pickett et al., 2005).
Society must deal with the multiple factors which can lead to criminality and deviance by putting in place effective measures to control and discourage deviance and crime.
