Direct demonstration of the causative agent by electron microscopy (EM):
Where facilities for electron microscopy are available and a viral disease is suspected, presence of the virus may be confirmed by this technique within few hours by direct examination of the material with EM by negative staining. The diagnosis may be even confirmed by immuno-electron-microscopy.
