It should be clear to you that a single cell, the fertilized egg, gives rise to various structures that we mentioned. Such a generation of cellular diversity is termed as differentiation. The differentiation is a broad term that includes

  1. Cyto differentiation,
  2. Histo differentiation and
  3. Development of shapes of organs.

The process of differentiation that results in the formation of diverse organs and tissues involves various types of cell movements known as morphogenetic processes. The morphogenetic processes are responsible for rearrangements of cell positions relative to each other. Further there is the shaping and realignment of individual cells also. The various morphogenetic processes can be with to belong to either one of the six subsequent processes.

  1. The direction and amount of cell divisions,
  2. Cell shape changes,
  3. Cell migration,
  4. Cell growth,
  5. Cell death and
  6. Changes in cell membrane and extracellular matrix.
