Hello everyone, the differences in classifications of offenders from my perspective and understanding is something like, low risk offenders are people who have maybe only committed one other crime or maybe this was their first offense. They have a stable home, family, friends, and a job so their risk of reoffending would be very low. How risk offenders do not need to make many check ins, or much interruption into their life since they have a stable living environment and their risk of reoffending is very low.
Medium risk offender have some past criminal history but nothing real constant to be considered a pattern. They may or may not struggle with some form of substance abuse or have trouble finding/keeping constant employment. With this type of offender it's really up n the air on if they will reoffend again. Kind of 50/50 or 30/70. The best help for them is to have rehabilitation programs specific to the problems they are dealing with. Along of course with check ins.
High risk offenders have a sort of extensive criminal history. They have repeat violent or even peashooter offenses. High risk offenders may live a chaotic lifestyle, no support from family or friends and they may even refuse treatment. With high risk offenders of abuse a matter of when are they going to reoffend again. Their rate of reoffending especially without treatment is very high. They would need intense monitoring, strict programs and mandatory specialized rehabilitation.
If a low risk offenders was to receive high risk treatment it could drastically mess up their lives. It would impact their jobs, family functions and just throw off their overall stability in their lives. If a high risk offender was to be placed with low risk offenders then he could jeopardize their rehabilitation. It could take their chances of reoffending from a 15 percent to a 50 percent. The chances that the high risk offender would bully or manipulate the low risk offenders is very high and not something that we would want when trying to reduce recidivism and also rehabilitate people.
