The difference between Chinese and American education
The Story of My Search
I was taught that students are the future of the country. Education has always been the great topic in every country. With the development of the world, China and America more and more exchanges. We know that American education is best in the world. So more and more Chinese students are coming to the US for study.
So far, I studied at Iowa Wesleyan College for two years. I have gained a lot of knowledge. Before I never understood why does the educational system in America attract so many foreign students. But now, I came to know about American education in a better way. So, I want to talk about the difference between Chinese and American education. I believe that making a comparison between Chinese and American education will help me to adapt to my study of the environment in the US.
In order to understand deeply about American education, I interviewed Sherril Gibbs. She was a librarian of IWC. She is American and understand American education. In this interview, I asked her some questions about American education. Her answers were clear and assured. That will be very helpful to my topic.
The Results of My Search
My research included an interview and other four sources. First, I want to talk about the strengths and the weaknesses of Chinese education. The strengths of the Chinese education system are that the scores are the most important standard for evaluating the academic achievements of students. The examination is something which teachers, students and parents focus on. So Chinese students are good at an exam or test. It has some downsides. The weaknesses of the system are that the examination score serves as the only criterion for a student's academic performance. Here's an example. "Here are the third grade children stopping twice a day to use ancient acupressure techniques to relax their eyes. Then their muscles from all that work. And after all, they face a lot of high pressure exams to determine if they get their shot at the future, college." (SAWYER). That shows us that their inner traits should also be emphasized. "For American students, they don't have so much pressure. They just, like, oh, this is my hobby, or I like this, I want to do this." (SAWYER). The most beautiful aspect of the study is that American students learn the important of research and apply their thought to the subject they learn instead of learning by rote. On this point, an officer of the Chinese government educational department put forward some proposals to reform the education system. "Sun said planned reforms over time should ease the pressure as test results are paired with student interviews and evaluation of the student's high school performance as part of an overall university admissions criteria."(CHI-CHI ZHANG). But China is population is so large. It's difficult to really do that.
Next, I want to talk about the strengths and the weaknesses of American education. I talked about the strengths of the American education with Sherril Gibbs. Although college tuition is very expensive in America, many Chinese students chose America to study rather than other foreign countries. American education system are the schools are categorized by a very important skill of learning and that is self learning. American students do more active learn, learn by doing rather than just listen to lecture. American students also do lots of team learn and research (Sheril). That's what Chinese students lack in their study. Besides that, I also know that the employment situation of American graduates. Some American students can find a good job, but it depends on their major. Education major can help them find a good job (Sheril). The weaknesses of the system are higher tuition. "There is much talk about the skyrocketing rise in college tuition. For most people, there is a real fear that a four-year degree has become unaffordable." (Gene A. Budig). This is a serious problem. It can affect the students study. Someone has paid attention to it and keeps trying to control rising costs.
Reflections on My Search
After my research, it widened my understanding of American education. Chinese and American education evaluation systems have the differences among the assessment standards and procedures. In addition to the self-localization problem, also has the big difference in the studies curriculum choice. But overall, Chinese and American educational models have their own strengths. Good educations don't only belong to American school but it's right of students in various countries to get good education too. We should learn from each other. It will lead to the better future of students.
