Problem:
I intend to research the role of government in the development and advancement of intermodal transportation infrastructure in the United States for this senior seminar. As a person engaged in both business operations with a logistics focus and military logistics operations, I have seen the vital role that integrated transportation systems play in facilitating the efficient movement of freight and the readiness of operations. Intermodalism-the use of several transportation modes in a coordinated manner-has emerged as the key to lowering costs, improving reliability, and supporting sustainability. Yet, the performance of intermodal systems usually relies on public sector involvement, policy guidance, and investment. My study will explore the ways in which local, state, and national governments influence intermodal development through policy, infrastructure investment, and public-private partnerships. In particular, I intend to look at the impact of recent policy initiatives such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Department of Transportation grant programs on freight corridors, port connectivity, and inland terminals. The goal is to identify whether these programs are accelerating the evolution of the U.S. freight infrastructure or if regulatory challenges are slowing progress.
