It is always important to assess patients for substance abuse and risk factors for suicide. Be willing to work with concerned families and their ideas of healthy behavior. Watch for if a patient seems withdrawn or unmotivated to participate in any of their care plans. Develop trust with the patient by showing patience and acknowledging any concerning behavior gently. Maybe they need therapy or a correction in medication causing suicidal ideas. If physical abuse is occurring, consul social services and Adult Protective Services.
