Problem: Antibiotics target bacteria because they have unique progressions not found in humancells. Many bacteria have a wall of their cells that is partially made of themacromolecule known as peptidoglycan. Peptidoglycan is made of amino sugars andpeptides. The human cells do not have peptidoglycan. Some antibiotics take advantageof this peptidoglycan cell wall in bacteria and prevents the macromolecule fromfinalizing. When this happens the cells in bacteria are very weak since they weren't ableto finish developing correctly. This weakened cell wall kills the bacteria. Since thehuman cells don't have this process, the antibiotic does not affect the human cell walls. The misuse of antibiotics can cause superbugs because we are killing off the goodbacteria wand not treating the viruses that make us sick. For instance when we havethe flu, antibiotics do not have any effect on the flu, so taking antibiotics can do moreharm than good. Using antibiotics when they are not needed can cause the bacteria todie off (including the good ones) and allow the stronger bacteria to grow and multiplyrapidly and possibly make us sick. This bacteria can start to develop resistance to theantibiotics and spread that resistance ont o other bacteria, causing superbugs. Need Assignment Help?
