Develop knowledge and skills on maintenance strategies

Aim

To develop knowledge and skills on maintenance strategies, reliability, maintainability and availability concepts and inspection schedule development.

Objective

To make students learn the concept of maintenance strategies, methodology involved in maintenance of machinery and to calculate failure rate, inspection frequency, cost of repair and cost of inspection.

A. Knowledge and understanding of the topic

- Demonstrate knowledge of acquisition of information
- Demonstrate appropriate application of module knowledge
- Demonstrate wider reading and comprehension of topic

B. Application and analysis of the topic (Module specific Skill)

- Critically analyze the functions of preventive maintenance and develop necessary planning and scheduling and control of preventive maintenance activities.
- Evaluate and allocate responsibilities of maintenance tasks between plant operator and maintenance personnel.
- Evaluate and apply mathematical models for optimum preventive maintenance and inspection.
- Evaluate reliability of a simple plant component and system.

C. The structure in terms of logic and coherence

Submissions should have a clear start and a clear end. Information within submissions should also be logical and well grouped. Report structure, Abstract, Introduction & Referencing, Result Analysis, and Conclusion & Future works.

D. The use of relevant work examples and/or examples gained from further reading

This coursework is an interesting and important part of study as it is proven that application of Process Equipment Maintenance (PEM) techniques to maintenance of equipments. It is suggested to read through some literatures especially those listed below and make a fair attempt to solve the questions.

Course Work Description (Task):

Machine maintenance is gaining importance in industry because of the need to increase reliability and to decrease the possibility of production loss due to the machine breakdown. Maintenance of equipment is still a challenge due to factors such as size, cost, complexity, and competition. Complex equipment and devices used in any system constitute majority of the capital invested in industry. Equipment is subject to deterioration with usage and time and deterioration is often reflected in higher operation costs and lower service quality. In order to keep operational costs down while maintaining good service quality, preventive maintenance (PM) is often performed on a scheduled basis. The cost of maintenance-related activities in industrial facilities has been estimated as15-40% of total operation costs and the trend toward increased automation has forced managers to pay even more attention to maintain complex equipment and keep them in available state.

(Mobley R Keith. 2004. Maintenance Fundamentals, Elsevier).

Task Expected to complete:

All students should select a technical paper (Journals, Conference Papers and/or from Company website) which deals with maintenance of equipments. Prepare a brief report, outlining:

1. The strategies of maintenance that can be applied for the efficient maintenance of equipment.

2. The method which is implemented to maintain equipment.

3. The condition indicators to know the status of the major parts of the equipment.

4. The data presented in the paper relevant to equipment maintenance.

5. The indication of future work (trends), if any, in this field.
