Theory plays a central role in research because it provides a structured way to explain relationships among concepts and guide the development of research questions. While general descriptions are important, theory helps researchers understand why phenomena occur. In social science research, theories help organize ideas and identify variables that may influence human behavior. Researchers can take theories and test whether they hold true in a particular setting, or construct a theory based on observations of patterns in the real world (Walden University, 2009). In either approach, theory provides direction for collecting evidence and interpreting findings.
One theory that is widely used in psychology is Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT) where thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are interconnected and that distorted thinking patterns can contribute to emotional distress. When one learns to identify and challenge these negative thought patterns, they can develop healthier emotional and behavioral responses.
To accept or apply CBT, I must believe that human beings actively interpret their experiences through cognitive processes and that these interpretations influence emotional and behavioral outcomes. So I must believe individuals are not simply reacting to events but are assigning meaning to them through their thoughts.
These assumptions align closely with constructivism which emphasizes that individuals develop knowledge through experiences, their interpretation, and meaning-making (Burkholder et al., 2020). CBT recognizes that individuals construct interpretations of events through their thinking patterns. Theoretical frameworks provide a structure that helps researchers understand these relationships and guide research design (Walden University Library, 2015). Research design helps ensure that the evidence collected adequately tests or explains theoretical propositions (de Vaus, 2001).
