Greenthumb Nurseries offers a wide array of garden products. It sells through wholesale and retail channels. Although Greenthumb sells through wholesale to other nurseries across North America, its retail operations to consumers are only in the upper Midwest. Its products include gardening supplies, seeds, plants, plant foods and fertilizers. Some of these products (like fertilizers) are essentially chemicals and require special handling and storage.

In a typical wholesale sales scenario, a customer places a call to the nursery. A sales associate takes the order and verifies the customer's credit record. The associate will then check if the desired items are in stock in the Greenthumb warehouse.  They do by looking up the item catalog number for each product.

After informing the customer as to whether the products are in stock and letting them know about any currently available discounts for the products and the order, the customer then decides whether or not to order. If the customer indicates she or he wants to order then the associate tells the customer the amount that is due.

Green thumb wants to also plan a new fully online order process that should operate in parallel to the existing phone order processes. However, online order fulfillment will be executed by a 3rd party logistics provider - which will be represented within Greenthumb as another "plant." It is anticipated that there will have to be occasional stock transfers from Greenthumb's primary warehouse to this "plant" in order to replenish the online order channel so that online orders can be fulfilled.

Once an order has been entered into the system the customer's account is updated, a delivery plan is generated. As noted above, for certain products (ex: Chemicals) the delivery plan must account for special shipping conditions (as per Federal law on hazardous materials). The product inventory is adjusted and the ordered items are pulled from stock (good issue & order pick). The items are then packed and shipped to the customer.

On the first of each month a billing statement is generated and mailed to the customer. If the customer pays within 2 weeks no additional penalty is due; Otherwise there is a 10% late payment fee.

In the retail sales scenario the process is much the same, except that payment is made at the time of order via credit card.

Greenthumb is seeking to implement the SAP SD (Sales & Distribution) module, with some use of Warehouse Management (WM) as well.
